BLUEGRASS TRAILBLAZER MISSY RAINES DIGS INTO HER BLUEGRASS ROOTS ON HIGHLANDER
First Single “These Ole Blues” features duet with Danny Paisley and the triple fiddles of Darol Anger, Shad Cobb and Ellie Hakanson
Nashville TN (March 8, 2023) – Missy Raines is excited to announce the upcoming release of her new album, HIGHLANDER, with the first single “These Ole Blues”.
Raines discovered the song while sifting through Loretta Lynn’s deep catalog. Lynn’s version was a classic heartache country shuffle, but when Raines heard it, she knew it needed two things: a bluegrass shuffle feel and Danny Paisley’s voice. So she invited Paisley, a childhood hero whom she describes as bluegrass royalty, to duet with her. Listening to the two singers swap vocal lines is like going to school in bluegrass, West Virginia-style. “Danny was a natural choice for this song because he has an edge and a soulfulness to his voice that cuts deep, and because his voice defines a lot of what bluegrass singing is to me,” she says. “He belts line after line with seeming abandon all the while reminding you that he is in complete control. Danny’s voice and his sound are a part of the soundtrack of my earliest influences.”
Raines version of “These Ole Blues” is a grooving shuffle with a driving backbeat, propelled by Raines’ upright bass, the entire band pushing and pulling on the beat in a way that’s the hallmark of the best bluegrass. Rounding out the track are the triple fiddles of Darol Anger, Shad Cobb and Ellie Hakanson as well as the other members of Raines’ touring outfit Allegheny: Tristin Scroggins (mandolin), Eli Gilbert (banjo) and Ben Garnett (guitar).

Hey folks, here's a brand new video of the quintessential banjo and bass duet, "Darlin’ Pal(s) of Mine" from my album, 'Royal Traveller'. My producer, gal pal, and favorite banjo player, Alison Brown, had the brilliant idea of bringing bass legends, Mike Bub and Todd Phillips, to create the ‘6 hands, 1 bass’ take on this classic Earl Scruggs and Jake Tullock duet. We had so much fun with the choreography on this one, we are truly dancing with the bass!
