Announcing Missy's Grand Ole Opry Debut January 18th, 2020

I’m excited to share that I will be debuting (with my own band) on the Grand Ole Opry Saturday, January 18, 2020. I will have an AMAZING band with me including Alison Brown on banjo, Ben Garnett on guitar, Casey Campbell on mandolin and John Mailander on fiddle.

I have had the honor to play the Opry during my stint with Claire Lynch, and as a duo with Jim Hurst, and with a few other folks on bass, but this will be the first time under just my name. Yea, I’m pretty stoked! What a way to start the New Year off!

"Darlin' Pal(s) of Mine" Wins 2019 IBMA "Instrumental Recording of the Year"

So happy to announce that my version of “Darlin’ Pal(s) of Mine” was named 2019 IBMA “Instrumental Recording of the Year”. The tune, a Carter Family classic made popular by Earl Scruggs and Jake Tullock, is featured on my GRAMMY® nominated “Royal Traveller” album and features Alison Brown on banjo, Mike Bub and Todd Phillips on basses.

Royal Traveller in Bluegrass Unlimited

Missy Raines has relentlessly established a reputation as a first-tier bassist and bandleader. Royal Travellerbuilds a strong case for her continued emergence as a singer, songwriter, and arranger as well. Produced by Alison Brown, this recording features five songs written or co-written by Raines, seamlessly integrated into a well-chosen array of covers.

Her “Allegheny Town” is a gentle, engaging song that fits in well with a body of material that manages to be both energetic and introspective. When she includes relatively familiar songs, such as Ola Belle Reed’s “I’ve Endured,” Laurie Lewis’ “Swept Away,” and “Fearless Love” (recorded by Bonnie Raitt and Dede Wyland), they all contain unique touches that make the songs distinctly hers. Adding Robbie Fulks’ “Goodbye Virginia” and Kate Campbell’s “Free World” only broadens the considerable stylistic range of this recording.

For a change, I've been in one place long enough to observe some of the magical-ness of a season coming into its own. And what a show.  Vivid reds and yellows are replacing greys and browns and the hedges are full of the rustling of new life.

Pansies - Latest Tumblr Post

Some spring ‘head’ cleaning here on my blog…

I always plant pansies in the fall because I know they will survive the winter and along the way they will provide a beautiful respite to the grey winter landscape.   

As spring is exploding around me,  I watch these flowers grow bolder and healthier each day and I couldn’t help but draw a comparison to myself and to life in general.

“When a bluegrass bass player and a banjo player are working on a record together, it’s just a matter of time before the idea of performing the quintessential banjo and bass duet, Darlin’ Pal of Mine, comes up in conversation. Alison had the brilliant idea of bringing in other players in to create the ‘6 hands, 1 bass’ take on the tune. Going in, we really didn’t know how we were going to make it all work but there was no question in my mind who the other bass players should be. Mike Bub and Todd Phillips. Mike, because his playing is so deeply rooted within the tradition of the great players like Jake Tullock, and Roy Huskey, Jr., and Todd, because of his unique melodic sensibility.  

It was a blast coming up with the ‘choreography’ for the section where we are all playing my bass. Lots of laughing and a few elbows-in-the-face moments! But we did it and the video turned out great. We had some very special guests show up that day so there are some fun cameos in it like Bobby Osborne and Jake’s son, Gary. Enjoy!
